Sometimes you come to a place that is divine. A heavenly sort of establishment that requires nothing more than an appetite. And, you’d probably think something like this would only exist when pigs fly. Well, for once, you’re right.

When Pigs Fly Pizzeria in Kittery, Maine is the pizza gods’ gift to the greater Portsmouth area. For some strange reason, very much like Loco Coco’s, this quality pizzeria is located in the confines of Kittery. Yet, we’re content on making weekly pilgrimages to WPF, if not daily treks.

Obviously, the pizza here is delicious. But our love affair starts even before we step foot into this spacious restaurant. If you remember from our most recent post, we are huge fans of the pre-dinner bread basket. But, WPF doesn’t offer such. We knew this going in. We also knew that the WPF Company Store attached to the restaurant has free samples of many bread varieties and different jams. If there is such a thing as a gluten heaven, well, we definitely saw the light and have lived to tell you about it.

After we delighted in our self-selected amuse-bouche, we finally ventured over to the pizzeria. And then, the heavens opened. Manna flowed to our table. And we ate. On the sixth day, we rested. Our brussels sprouts appetizer was out of this world crazy brains delicious. On the menu they are listed as “crispy brussels sprouts” but they are so much more. Presented as floating morsels in a sea of some mesmerizing sesame ginger sauce, these brussels sprouts will make you like brussels sprouts.

Admittedly, this picture of the brussels sprouts isn’t that great:

Yet, all this time and we haven’t shared news about the pizza. Let it be known: the pizza is awesome. We went with the classic heirloom tomato pizza which is a sauceless adventure also promising basil, arugula, and — the best ingredient — smoked mozzarella. We devoured it without second thought. We showed no mercy. And our stomachs were well satisfied.

Portsmouth and the surrounding environs are not void of great pizza places. It’s kind of why we stay here. And When Pigs Fly Pizzeria is definitely a worthy compatriot in the challenge to make sure we are eating pizza all day every day.

Don’t forget to go back to the WPF Company Store after eating though. There’s delicious bread (a chocolate bread, hello?!), some sweets, and a wall of jams. You’ll be happier knowing that even if a snowstorm will keep you inside for a few days, that you’ve got a treasure trove of artisanal bread to keep you warm.
